I will have a regular post tomorrow as well, but I want to take some time to put up some predictions for Thursdays Pac-10 basketball slate. I will try to get some predictions up every full Pac-10 slate, and on occasion I'll give my prediction on top 25 match ups as well.
Washington 76 Arizona State 65
Arizona 83 Washington State 69
UCLA 68 Stanford 63
California 73 USC 65
No real surprises there, but it is the Pac-10 and ya never know what could happen, especially down in the desert where the Huskies bring their road troubles to ASU, and WSU brings their bi-polar offense into Tucson to try to knock off the first place Wildcats.

The NFL Labor dispute...whats all the fuss?
The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business where the majority of the money is being split between owners and players, yes I know DUH. Yet somehow the owners and players can’t agree on how many millions each side should be getting.
My first reaction to this was ‘who cares, the players make enough money already’. But then I got to thinking a little bit more about it and maybe the players have a point in this argument.
Here is what is happening…The owners want to give players the same percentage cut that they have been getting of the overall pie, which seems fair at first; they get the same amount, what’s the problem?
The players want a 50-50 split, but the owners want it to be somewhere in the realm of 40-60 in their favor of course.
The problem is that the amount of money the NFL is earning is down because of the economy and fans not spending as much money going to games. So this means that the players will be earning less money, even though it is the same percent.
The NFL is monetarily run by its’ fans, and when was the last time a fan said they loved their favorite teams’ owners? Probably doesn’t happen much. Fans go to games and buy jerseys because of what the players do on the field, not what the owner does.
Yes the owner is in the football business to make money, and he wants to pay his employees, the players, as little as he can in order to maximize profits.
This is a great business model, but the NFL isn’t your standard business, it is a form of entertainment with the use of rare talent.
If the players in the NFL were not able to entertain, owners would have no money at all. People don’t want to go to a football game to watch two bad teams play one another. Fans want good players, good players are rare, and guess what NFL owners, rare things cost more!
The NFL players’ average salary is easily enough for them to get by and then some, so don’t think this is me throwing them a pity party. But the fact of the matter is why should the owners be getting such a big piece of the pie?
They do have the riskier side of the business, they have to put money forward to pay for just about everything; stadium costs, practice facilities, taxes, and on top of that salaries of all of the organization’s employees. So yes I understand how much they have to pay out, but the cut they end up with shouldn’t be by paying players less.
If they are unable to continue making money at the same rate when they signed deals with their players, that is their fault, not the players. Yes I know the CBA makes it so they have to agree on new terms, but owners taking money away because they aren’t making enough isn’t right.
If they need more money they have to find a better business model. Maybe that means paying coaches less, or lowering the cost of concessions, I really don’t know what they should do, that isn’t my job.
At the end of the day it makes sense to me what both sides are saying, but I am siding with the players on this one. They do the high majority of the work and should be paid at least half of the money made from their skills.
The two other pieces to the Collective Bargaining Agreement are the rookie wage scale and the schedule length.
The Rookie wage scale is something both sides agree needs to be fixed. Currently the top picks in the draft are earning more than most quality veterans. In a league where it seems like half of the top picks are busts, rookies shouldn’t be making near as much as they are. Both sides agree, but no exact fix has been decided upon.
Right now the 16 game schedule seems like a long enough schedule for the NFL, but the owners want to add two games to the regular season and remove 2 preseason games. Their reasoning…more money of course!
While tickets are sold to the pre-season games, they are low-attendance games; which makes them much less profitable than the regular season. So in that sense adding 2 games is a smart move, but I don’t think it is smart from any other angle.
First and foremost is player safety…Right now the league seems to be battling player safety issues on a weekly basis, so adding 2 games would only add to the current problem. Players’ bodies are giving out on them towards the end of the season, and they shouldn’t be subjected to even more abuse.
Another reason it seems like a bad idea is that it probably wouldn’t change much as far as getting the best teams into the playoffs. Yes more games may mean the cream will rise to the top, but that doesn’t mean the best teams will make the playoffs. Maybe it means the better teams will miss because they lost some fluke game in week 19, ya just never know.
Overall I think the whole issue is based on money though, not games being played. The pie should be split evenly between players and owners, then work out the rookie pay scale. Both parties make plenty of money, but the owners have a much longer shelf life than the players…just look at Jerry Jones.

Albert Pujols situation...Pay the man? Or let him walk?
Albert Pujols is the best player in baseball...and it isn't even close in my opinion. The guy has never had a bad season in his career. The season people point to as a "down year" was 2007...a year where all he did was hit .327 with 32 home runs and 103 rbis. Numbers any GM would take as a career year from his first basemen. Heck even last season people thought maybe Pujols had lost a step...he finished the season hitting .312 with 42 homers and 118 rbis. Those are ridiculous numbers from the Gold Glove firstbasemen...yet the Cardinals still haven't locked him up in the future...But maybe they are being smart?
Here is a list of potential suiters...
The man is a machine...He has never had less than 32 hrs, 103 rbis or a .312 average! That is insane..plus he is not only the face of the Cardinals organization, but also all of baseball...and maybe ESPN...?
Pujols has said that he will not talk about his contract once he reports to Spring Training through the season, he also will veto any trade the Cardinals may try to make with him. He plans to make a statement Tuesday to say negotiations are off. Meaning he will hit the free agent market at the end of the season. If he wants to he could become the highest played player EVER, and chances are that will happen no matter who he signs with.
Pujols wants a 10 year deal..the problem is he is 31 years old right now...so by the end of the deal he'll be 41 years old. I don't know the last time a 41 year old hitter was any good...I mean the occasional pitcher can keep pitching into their 40s, but a hitter, plus in the NL so no DH..seems unlikely to me... I get that Pujols wants to be signed up for the rest of his career, but why not go with 8 and a team option? Maybe they offered him that and he said no? Maybe he doesn't want to be a Cardinal anymore? I doubt that though, he seems like a high character guy who would stay with the same team all of his career if he could. I mean the guy won't let fans call him El Hombre because he thinks it takes away from Stan Musial's legacy as Stan the Man...most guys wouldn't think twice about that, but Albert is different.
Here's what I think about the contract situation...The Cardinals should give him a blank check on an 8 year deal. Whatever money he wants or thinks he deserves, let him have it. Have whatever sort of clause in there they need so he has no way of re-negotiation. Have something in there where if he suffers an injury that prevents him from finishing it, they can pay him less money. Less, but still a high amount so he feels comfortable. Add in a team option for two years, but in separate options. Even make it incentive based if needed, for example if he hits over .300 in his 8th year the team has to pick up that 9th season. I am not a contract guru, but all of this seems like it could make it into a deal that inks Pujols to the Cards for the rest of his career... unfortunately it looks like we will have to wait until October before this one clears up...One thing is for sure though if/when Pujols hits the free agent market, the Cardinals price to resign him will inflate like a hot air balloon and rise until they find a way to sign him.
Here is a list of potential suiters...
AL:
Baltimore Orioles Boston Red Sox New York Yankees Tampa Bay Rays Toronto Blue Jays Chicago White Sox Cleveland Indians Detroit Tigers Kansas City Royals Minnesota Twins Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Oakland Athletics Seattle Mariners Texas Rangers
NL:
Atlanta Braves Florida Marlins New York Mets Philadelphia Phillies Washington Nationals Chicago Cubs Cincinnati Reds Houston Astros Milwaukee Brewers Pittsburgh Pirates St. Louis Cardinals Arizona Diamondbacks Colorado Rockies Los Angeles Dodgers San Diego Padres
San Francisco Giants
San Francisco Giants
Oh Right...Thats everyone in baseball...While not every team could pay the man, every team would LOVE to have Albert Pujols on their team.

Huskies win thanks to Thomas lighting up the scoreboard
It was a windy day in Seattle yesterday and that caused the power to go out in the middle of the Husky games. Luckily there was a generator to keep the place lit, but it took some time before play resumed with slightly dimmed lighting. Isaiah Thomas also had his lights knocked out, but it was Darnell Gant who did it. Thomas was obviously mad about it and let Gant know it, Gant got in his way and the guy knocked down a three. Thomas left the game, but when he came back he sure lit the place up even with the dimmed lights. Thomas took over the last 3 minutes of the game in a way I have never seen him do before.
He had no points at that point and had done next to nothing to help Washington but they were still in a commanding position. He then hit four threes and two free throws and had no misses. It was good for 14 points in under 3 minutes to close out the half. He showed that when he wants to he will carry the team on his back and do whatever it takes to win the game. Thomas wants to win and he wants to bring the Huskies deep into March, games like this will be very helpful for the Dawgs.
The second half was a boring one, nothing really happened other than a couple of tech's. The one on Aziz was an awful call in my opinion...he wasn't on the rim for more than a split second but still got tech'd up. It's a bogus call to make when a guy has defenders underneath him or doesn't have balance to let go. Aziz isn't trying to show off or make anyone look dumb so don't make that call. The throwing of elbow deserved the tech and MBA maybe deserved one too, but must not have connected with his elbow so no tech. The refs overall just didn't do a very good job but I don't think it cost either team much.
I like what I saw at times from the Huskies, but I am a tad worried about my prediction of a sweep of the Arizona schools. I still think they win at ASU, but I think they could lose a close one to Arizona. The team doesn't know how to close games outside of Seattle and that may be the downfall of them going into the NCAA tournament next month.

The Mariners are...Gross?
I'm reading through Art Thiel's book about how the 95 Mariners saved baseball in Seattle right now, I am not far in the book, but I can't help but thinking how far and fast the M's have fallen. I can't remember anything before the 1995 season, but I remember the Double by Edgar and every time I hear the call from the late great Dave Niehaus I get the chills, that play was amazing, and is my first memory of watching sports, and to this day is in my top 5 sports moments. The Mariners of current are nothing I want to watch, and it seems so long ago that they were watchable...
The last time the Mariners made the playoffs was the 2001 season, a season that will be remembered by many for the 116 wins, but will be remembered by me as a huge disappointment. Think about it, the team won more games than anyone else ever had, that is no doubt AMAZING, but they didn't make it to the world series, and quite frankly they weren't even close. The Yankees came through and blew away the M's winning the series 4-1, the only win by the Mariners came against the completely over rated El Duque, aka Orlando Hernandez. That team was really full of guys who all had season's of their lives, guys like Boone, David Bell, Al Martin are not supposed to be on record setting teams. Their rotation was Garcia, Sele, Moyer, Paul Abbott and John Halama. Yes Garcia and Moyer are solid pitchers, but of the others not a single one is someone I would call anything above average. So yes congrats to the 2001 M's for a wonderful regular season, but you really didn't accomplish anything.
Seattle has two other division championships, 97 and 95, which is pitiful to think about, but looking through their team its amazing they didn't win more. They had three of the best players in baseball on their team at the same time, Griffey, A-Rod and Randy Johnson yet they managed 2 division championships. Granted the big three weren't together long, but all of them will go to the hall of fame, but they were all losers in Seattle. The 97 season the M's went out in the first round of the playoffs losing the series 3-1 to Baltimore. That was a team that probably should've been able to make it to round two, but they are Mariners so they are supposed to lose.
The 95 season was magical, I will not say a bad thing about that season, call it bias or whatever you want, but it was amazing. The team was out of the hunt in August, or so it seemed, but they fought their way back to force a one game playoff with the Angels which they won. The rest is history, game 5 11th inning down a run and Edgar hits the double to score Griffey, the Mariners move on to play in the ALCS. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have a song that is almost all about that double, it's called My Oh My, go check it out and listen...
So it's been 10 years since the last division title and I am sick of watching this team do stupid things. They looked to be a contender 2 years ago, but followed that up with their second 100 loss season in 3 years. They got Cliff Lee to try to win the world series, but that didn't work and he was moved at the mid-season mark. This year they look like they are following the Pete Carrol idea of getting as many guys who have done little to nothing and hoping to strike it rich. Guys like Gabe Gross, or Felix's older brother, even Vlad Guerrero's nephew has been signed. Maybe those will work, but the Mariners are going nowhere fast and it sure makes baseball hard to watch around here.
I would give just about anything to have a good baseball team in Seattle, but I think I may be waiting another few years, heck it took the Mariners 14 years to have a winning season and another 4 to make the playoffs, so maybe the luck has worn off and I need to stick to other sports in Seattle...Although there isn't much success in that department either...Maybe I'll just play fantasy baseball, I seem to be good at that!

What is the deal with the Huskies?
Last night was one of the most amazing games I have seen the Huskies play in the last few years. The team made 17 threes, had 11 blocks and 30 assists. From the start until they lit their victory cigar (Brendan Sherrer) the Huskies looked unbeatable. On defense they were active, annoying the Cal offense and not allowing them to get any easy buckets. On offense they looked just as good, even Aziz N'Diaye was able to beat the zone in the game.
Thats all good and fine, but lets not forget the Huskies had lost 3 in a row, all on the road. And this win was at home, where they always dominate. It makes me wonder if the Huskies are a good team, or are they just REALLY good at home?
I think the Huskies are a good basketball team, but they are not even close to a great or elite team. Isaiah Thomas is one of the best players in the country, but some games he just never gets going and the Huskies rarely win those games. MBA is another great player, but even in the games he plays good in, he fails to convert buckets that even I could make. Those two guys are a big reason for the Huskies current record, but they are also a big reason for their losing streak, neither of them knows how to play on the road.
Thomas has brought back Raising the Roof (RTR) and also started Pushing it Down (PID) on the road. He obviously feeds of the crowd which is good when he is home, but he can't tune out the road sometimes on the road. It is a tough thing to deal with, but Thomas may need to tone down his emotion and reactions with the crowd. He is a fun guy and wants to entertain but at this point in the season I don't think it's helping. Actually I think he realized it's hurting the team as well. He is a self admitted Twitter addict and has said he's taking a break from it until March 12th, which is the end of the Pac-10 tournament. That takes away a lot of his interaction with the fans and if Thursday is a sign that it could help, Thomas may be gone for good. Now I'm not saying Thomas can't play on the road, he obviously can and has, but he does have the tendency to disappear at times on the road which leads me to believe it's all upstairs for him.
A few weeks ago Terrence Ross coined the new phrase 'Like a Ross', and man is that the case with his talents. They are one of a kind and that was on display last night. The way he hung up in the air on a reverse lay-in was amazing, he missed but the play was still absolutely beautiful by the freshman. Romar needs to get the guy in the game a lot more, even though apparently his defense isn't up to snuff, his offense can really be a spark plug for the Huskies. I hope this guy stays around for several years and can eventually lead Washington deep into March.
Venoy Overton has struggled all season long, he has been injury ridden for the majority of the season and it just seems like something has been bugging him up until recently. But he was back to his old self being a pain in the butt to the Cal ball handlers. He had just one steal but was all over the place in the game. He was moving the ball up court to speed up the game and dishing the ball out for 7 assists, also scoring more than 10 points as well. He has been the Huskies signature 6th man and if he keeps it up, the Huskies will be getting attention again from across the country.
I think the Stanford game this weekend is meaningless! The Huskies will probably win by a solid margin, because it is a home game and they always win. But next week will be the true tell tale sign of what is to come for the Huskies. Thursday they play at ASU, a team that they should roll over, but because it is on the road I think it could go either way. If they win that game handily I think they will have a great shot at beating Arizona. They have already won once at home and yes they stink on the road, but it is a must win if the Huskies want to win the conference.
So I asked what's the deal with the Huskies...My answer is that they are mentally weak. They haven't learned how to deal with success nor playing on the road. Two things they will have to figure out if they want to win anything of note this year. We won't know what their real deal is until they hit next week and then we'll see whether they sink or float...My guess is they will be floating high and sweep Arizona next week to get back on track.

Who I am and What I do
My name is Mitchell Larsen, I probably was a sports fanatic before I could walk. I started playing soccer when I was 3 and was flipping through the Seattle P.I. Sports section before I could even read. My passion for sports has only grown since then, I spend hours every day reading through sports blogs, stats and playing fantasy baseball and football. Recently I have begun my professional career as a sports journalist with UDubSports.com which is Rivals.com Washington Huskies site. You can go there and find some of my articles on the Huskies and their new recruits.
While that is all good and fun I don't get to put my opinion anywhere in those. I am just a reporter and not a fan, otherwise there would be a conflict of interest. This is why I want to start this blog so I can talk about what is going on in sports and throw my thoughts out there and analyze things I find interesting. I can't promise to be unbiased, but I will do everything I can to stay away from being a homer.
I will focus on a few different things here, first being local sports. Huskies, Mariners and Seahawks for the most part, but also Cougar and high school news...which isn't too different. I will also give my thoughts on national stories that are going on and anything else that I want to talk about.
I need to be VERY clear that this is in no way connected to my work with UDubSports. I will post links to my stories over there, but what is seen on here is ME, and anything off of this website is my professional work, the two will not mix. Because I have media access with Rivals I can't share any press conference news or quotes I get while on the job.
I want to bring out my fan side here with the added effect that I do work for the media and I have some good insights that I would like to share.
Ideally I will be posting something daily, whether it is a full blown story or just a short splurge I want to keep this active. Share it with your friends if you like it, tell me if you want to see something else, I am always willing to write about something someone else suggests.
My first real post will come within the next few hours so stay tuned...but for now here is a list of some but not all of my published articles at UDubSports.com, some are premium some are not.
